Founded in 2025 by Erica Mateo, Casabuela Café was inspired by necessity and rooted in memories of her late maternal grandmother. The café's design pays homage to Erica's Brooklyn upbringing, Puerto Rican heritage and grandmother's love. 

As a newly single mom and busy professional, Erica faced a common struggle: finding a space that met both her needs and her toddler’s. Traditional play spaces overlooked parents, and adult venues weren’t designed for little ones.

Determined to create what she couldn’t find, Erica tapped into cherished memories of her grandmother's house. Her grandmother’s home was a sensory haven filled with love, the aroma of cooked meals, vibrant plants, puzzles, crocheted quilts, beaded curtains and family gatherings —a space brimming with warmth, culture and community.

Inspired by this legacy, Erica envisioned Casabuela Café: a welcoming space where care and community come together under one roof to create a haven for parents to recharge, connect, and feel supported, while their kids explore, learn and grow.

Casabuela Café honors Luz Santiago’s memory through its thoughtful design and principles—celebrating authenticity, care and culture at every turn.
